The 11th House in Astrology: Friends, Hopes and Allies

The 11th house rules friends, allies, hopes and the support of community. Learn why it was called the Good Spirit, the planets there and how to read your own.

No one gets far alone. Behind most good things in a life there is a friend who made an introduction, a group that offered belonging, a mentor who believed in you before you believed in yourself, or simply a hope that kept you going.

In astrology, these supports belong to the 11th house. The ancient astrologers counted it among the best places in the chart and gave it a beautiful name: the Good Spirit.

This guide explains what the 11th house governs, why Jupiter rejoices there, how each planet behaves in it, and how to read your own 11th house step by step.

What the 11th House Governs

The traditional significations of the 11th house include:

  • Friends and friendship: the people who choose to stand beside you
  • Allies and supporters: those who help your plans along
  • Hopes and wishes: what you look forward to and work toward
  • Benefactors and patrons: people with influence who offer favor, gifts or opportunity
  • Trust and praise: William Lilly included confidence, praise and the faithfulness of friends here
  • The calves and ankles, in the old body scheme

Turning the chart adds another layer. The 11th is the 2nd house counted from the 10th, so it was also read as the resources of those in power: an employer's money, a patron's wealth, or the rewards that come from career.

The Good Spirit

The Hellenistic astrologers called the 11th house the Good Spirit (in Greek, Agathos Daimon). In Greek religion, a good daimon was a kindly guardian presence, a protective spirit of household and fortune. The opposite house, the 12th, was called the Bad Spirit.

The 11th house was paired with the 5th, called Good Fortune. These were the two most fortunate succedent houses, and each was the joy of a benefic planet.

Jupiter's Joy

Jupiter has its joy in the 11th house. Jupiter is the greater benefic: the planet of generosity, protection, faith, wisdom and increase. A house of friends, allies, hope and favor is its natural home. Venus, the lesser benefic, rejoices in the opposite house, the 5th. You can read more in our article on planetary joys.

Modern Layers

Modern astrology describes the 11th house as groups, communities, networks, social causes, collective ideals and long-term goals. It is often linked with the future and with the role you play in a larger community.

These ideas follow from the old meaning. Friends become networks, patrons become sponsors, and hopes become goals. The traditional core is a little warmer: the 11th is about the people who are good to you, and the good you hope for.

Where the 11th House Sits in the Chart

The 11th is a succedent house, one of four (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) that follow the angles and gather what they produce. It follows the 10th house of career, so it often shows the rewards, friendships and alliances that grow out of your public life.

It forms a sextile to the rising sign, a friendly sixty-degree aspect, and sits above the horizon close to the Midheaven. For these reasons the old authors ranked it as one of the best houses for planets. In Lilly's table of accidental strength, a planet in the 11th earns one of the higher bonuses, alongside the 4th and 7th.

How to Read Your 11th House

  • Find the sign of the 11th house. Count eleven signs from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as one. Virgo rising gives a Cancer 11th. Aries rising gives an Aquarius 11th. The sign describes the kind of friends you attract and the style of your hopes.
  • Find its ruler. With traditional rulers: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • See where the ruler lives. An 11th ruler in the 10th suggests friends and allies who help your career. In the 3rd, friends may come from your neighborhood or school, or be like siblings. In the 7th, a friend may become a partner.
  • Judge the ruler's condition. Its sign, aspects and sect describe how reliable your support is. Our guide to benefic and malefic planets explains which planets usually help.
  • Look at planets inside and aspects to the house. Planets in the 11th describe the kind of friendships and hopes you experience.

Venus in the 11th House

Venus here brings warmth and ease to friendship. You may be well liked in groups and drawn to friends who share your tastes. Love may begin as friendship. Traditional authors saw Venus here as a sign of pleasant social life and help from others.

Mars in the 11th House

Mars here brings energy to friendship and shared causes. You may rally people, fight for your friends or take the lead in groups. Conflicts with friends can flare quickly. At its best, this placement turns friendship into a powerful alliance.

Jupiter in the 11th House

This is Jupiter's joy, one of the most fortunate placements in traditional astrology. It often brings generous friends, helpful patrons and hopes that come true over time. You may be a source of encouragement for others. Even here, Jupiter's sign and condition shape how full the blessing feels.

Saturn in the 11th House

Saturn here takes friendship seriously. You may have a few loyal friends rather than many casual ones, or friends who are older or more established. Hopes may take time to come true. Over time, Saturn often builds a small circle of people you can rely on completely.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

As secondary modern factors, Uranus may bring unusual friends or sudden changes in social circles, Neptune idealism about friendship, and Pluto intense, transforming alliances.

An Empty 11th House

An empty 11th house does not mean you have no friends or no hopes. It means the house's ruler carries its story.

Study the ruler's sign, house, aspects and condition. That planet describes your friendships, allies and the support you can count on.

When the 11th House Becomes Active

Traditional astrology has a simple timing technique called annual profections. Each year of life activates one house in turn, starting with the 1st house at birth. The 11th house becomes the focus of the year at ages 10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70 and 82.

In those years, friendships, groups, patrons and long-held hopes often come into view. New alliances form, old friends return, or you take stock of what you are really hoping for. The ruler of your 11th house becomes the "lord of the year" and is worth watching. Our guide to annual profections explains the method.

Friendship Across the Chart

The 11th house is the main house of friends, but it is not the only place to look. Traditional astrologers also considered Jupiter and Venus, the two benefic planets, as general signs of help and goodwill from others. A strong, well-placed Jupiter anywhere in the chart often suggests that support arrives when it is needed. Venus shows the warmth and ease you bring to social life.

It also helps to compare the 11th with the 7th house. The 7th describes people bound to you by agreement or rivalry. The 11th describes people who stand beside you by choice. Many lives are shaped as much by good friends as by partners.

A Worked Example

This is a fictional chart, invented for teaching.

Imagine someone we will call Ben, born at night with Virgo rising. Cancer is his 11th house, so the Moon rules it. The Moon sits in Taurus, its exaltation, in his 9th house. Saturn sits in Cancer inside his 11th.

  • Cancer on the 11th suggests friendships that feel like family, and hopes centered on security and belonging.
  • The Moon exalted in the 9th links friends with study, travel or faith. Ben may meet his closest friends at university, abroad or in a spiritual community. In a night chart, the Moon is in sect, adding to its strength.
  • Saturn in Cancer is in its detriment, a sign where it struggles. In a night chart, Saturn is also out of sect. Friendships may feel hard to build at first, and Ben may feel lonely in groups.
  • The Moon's strength helps. Because the 11th ruler is so well placed, the support he seeks often arrives through the 9th house world, even if it takes time.

Together, this sketches a person who may struggle to fit into groups early on, then finds deep, lasting friendships through learning and shared meaning.

Common Myths About the 11th House

"The 11th house is only about groups and social media." Its traditional core is friendship, allies, hope and favor.

"An empty 11th means no friends." The 11th ruler describes your friendships.

"Saturn in the 11th means you will be lonely." It often means fewer, deeper and longer-lasting friendships.

"The 11th house is Aquarius's house." That is modern shorthand. Your 11th house is the sign that actually falls there.
