Your Rising sign (Ascendant) is the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It sets up every house in your chart and names your chart ruler, so it needs your birth time.
What your Rising sign is
Your Rising sign, also called the Ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the exact minute and place you were born. Think of it as the doorway of your chart. It describes the way you walk into a room, the pace you naturally move at, and the first impression people form before they know you well.
In traditional astrology the Rising sign carries even more weight than that. It decides how the whole chart is laid out, and it names your chart ruler, the planet that leads the rest of the story. That is why many astrologers look at the Ascendant before anything else.
Why it needs your exact birth time and place
The sky turns once a day, so all twelve signs take a turn on the eastern horizon in about twenty-four hours. That gives each sign roughly two hours as the Rising sign, though the real length varies. Some signs rise quickly and others slowly, depending on how far north or south you were born.
Because of this, two babies born in the same hospital ninety minutes apart can have different Rising signs. A time from a birth certificate or hospital record is the best source. If you only know that you were born around lunchtime, treat the result as a good guess and check again if you ever find a more exact time. The city matters too, because the horizon over Chicago is not the horizon over Lisbon.
Your chart ruler: the planet behind the door
Every sign has a planet that rules it. Aries and Scorpio belong to Mars, Taurus and Libra to Venus, Gemini and Virgo to Mercury, Cancer to the Moon, Leo to the Sun, Sagittarius and Pisces to Jupiter, and Capricorn and Aquarius to Saturn. Whichever planet rules your Rising sign becomes your chart ruler.
Say you have Libra rising. Venus is then your chart ruler, and where Venus sits says a lot about where your life energy tends to go. A Libra Ascendant with Venus right there in the 1st house often wears its charm openly, while one with Venus in the 8th house may save its warmth for a few close, trusted people.
How the Rising sign builds your houses
This site uses whole-sign houses, the oldest house system. Your Rising sign becomes your entire 1st house, the next sign in order becomes your 2nd house, and so on around the circle. With Scorpio rising, for example, Sagittarius is your 2nd house of money and resources, and Taurus falls in the 7th house of partners.
So the Rising sign does more than describe your manner. It sets which part of life each planet lands in. If the Rising sign is wrong, every house shifts along with it, which is why an accurate time matters so much for this one placement.
How it differs from your Sun sign
Your Sun sign shows what you are building toward and what gives you a sense of purpose. Your Rising sign shows how you approach life day to day and how your body and manner carry you through it. A Capricorn Sun with Sagittarius rising might be serious about long-term goals yet come across as open, restless and quick to laugh. Neither one is the real you on its own; they are two parts of the same picture. The free birth chart reading on this site reads your Sun, Moon and Rising together, which is often the clearest place to start.

Questions
Can I find my Rising sign without a birth time?
Not reliably. Without a time, any of the twelve signs could have been rising, so you need at least an approximate time to get an answer worth trusting.
Why does another website show a different Rising sign?
Usually the birth time or city was entered differently, or the time zone for that date was handled differently. Daylight saving rules have changed over the decades, and a birth near a sign boundary can tip one way or the other.
Is the Rising sign the same as the Ascendant?
Yes. Rising sign and Ascendant are two names for the same thing: the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born.
What if I was born right as the Rising sign changed?
Read about both signs and both possible chart rulers, and notice which fits your manner more closely. An exact time from a birth record usually settles it.
