Your Sun sign is the one most people know, but the house your Sun sits in matters just as much. Add your birth time to see both.
What your Sun sign describes
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was passing through on the day you were born. It is the placement most people already know, and it speaks to your core sense of self: what gives you energy, what you want to be recognized for, and the kind of purpose that makes you feel most alive.
The Sun works like a lamp. It shows where you want to shine and what you are willing to work for. A Taurus Sun might find that purpose in building something steady and beautiful over many years, while a Gemini Sun often feels most alive when there is something new to learn, explain or connect.
How the Sun sign is calculated
The Sun moves through all twelve signs once a year, spending about thirty days in each. The changeover lands somewhere around the 19th to the 23rd of each month, but the exact day and hour shift slightly from one year to the next.
That is why the date ranges printed in magazines are only approximate. If your birthday falls within a day or two of a sign change, the year, the time and the place of your birth all count. Someone born on March 20 could be a Pisces in one year and an Aries in another. For most people, though, the date alone is enough to know the Sun sign for certain.
Why the house matters as much as the sign
The sign tells you how your Sun expresses itself. The house tells you where in life that energy goes. This site uses whole-sign houses, where your Rising sign becomes the 1st house and each following sign takes the next house in turn, so finding the house takes your birth time.
Picture two Leo Suns. One has the Sun in the 6th house, so the wish to shine may show up through daily work, craft and being genuinely useful. The other has it in the 11th house, where friendships, groups and shared causes become the stage. Same sign, very different lives.
How strong the Sun is in its sign
Traditional astrology also asks how comfortable a planet is in its sign, which astrologers call dignity. The Sun rules Leo, so it feels at home there, and it is exalted, meaning especially well supported, in Aries. It has a harder time in Aquarius and Libra, the signs opposite those two.
A harder placement is not a bad one. It means the Sun's warmth has to work through a sign with different priorities, such as fairness and cooperation in Libra or the needs of the group in Aquarius. Many people with these placements shine brightest when they are lifting others up.
What to do next
The Sun sign is one voice in a larger conversation. Your Moon describes what you need emotionally, and your Rising sign describes how you meet the world. The free birth chart reading on this site reads those three together, which gives a far more personal picture than the Sun sign alone. If you have your birth time, add it above so you can see your Sun's house as well.

Questions
What does it mean to be born on the cusp?
It means your birthday falls near a sign change. You still have one Sun sign, not a blend of two; the exact time and place of birth decide which one.
Do I need my birth time to find my Sun sign?
Usually not. You only need it if you were born within a day or two of a sign change, or if you want to see which house your Sun is in.
Why do people with the same Sun sign seem so different?
Because the Sun is one placement among many. The house, the Moon, the Rising sign and the aspects (the angles planets make to each other) all change how a Sun sign shows up.
Is my Sun sign the same as my horoscope sign?
Yes. Most horoscope columns are written by Sun sign, although many readers find that the column for their Rising sign fits better, since it lines up with their houses.
