The 4th House in Astrology: Home, Family, Roots and Land

The 4th house rules home, parents, land, ancestry and the private foundations of life. Learn its traditional meaning, the planets there and how to read yours.

Mystic Birth Chart Editorial StudioUpdated Published

Every life rests on something hidden. Before anyone sees your work or your relationships, there is a home you came from, a family story you carry, and a private place where you return when the day is over.

In astrology, that foundation is the 4th house. It sits at the very bottom of the chart, underneath everything else, like the cellar of a house or the roots of a tree.

This guide explains what the 4th house means in traditional astrology, what modern astrologers add, what each planet does there, and how to read your own 4th house step by step.

What the 4th House Governs

The traditional significations of the 4th house include:

  • Parents and ancestry: the family line you come from. Later traditions often gave the 4th to the father in particular
  • Home and dwelling: the house you live in and the household you build
  • Land and real estate: fields, buildings, property and anything fixed to the ground
  • Inheritance of land: family property passed down
  • Hidden things: buried objects, treasure, and what lies below the surface
  • The end of matters: how things conclude, including the closing chapter of life
  • The chest and lungs, in the old scheme that linked houses to the body

The Hellenistic astrologers called the 4th house the Subterraneous place or the Underground (in Greek, hypogeion), because it points straight down beneath the earth. The degree at the bottom of the chart is called the IC, short for the Latin Imum Coeli, "the lowest part of the sky."

William Lilly gave the 4th house to the father, to "lands, houses, tenements," to hidden treasure and to "the end of anything." That last phrase is worth remembering. The 4th house holds both beginnings (roots, ancestry) and endings (conclusions, the grave), the way soil holds both seeds and what returns to it.

Which Parent?

Traditional astrologers usually read the parents through planets as well as houses: the Sun and Saturn for the father, the Moon and Venus for the mother, adjusted for day and night charts. Many later authors gave the 4th to the father and the 10th to the mother. Many modern astrologers reverse it, or read the 4th as the parent who provided the most care and the sense of home.

The practical answer is to read the 4th as the family foundation in general, then let the planets narrow down which parent is being described.

Modern Layers

Modern astrology describes the 4th house as your emotional roots, your private self, your sense of belonging, and the inner foundation you return to when life is hard. It is also linked to childhood memories and the patterns you absorbed at home.

These are natural extensions of the old meaning. A house of land and ancestry easily becomes a house of the inner ground you stand on.

Where the 4th House Sits in the Chart

The 4th house is one of the four angular houses, along with the 1st, 7th and 10th. Angular houses sit on the main axes of the chart, and planets there act strongly and with real consequence in life. You can read more in our article on angular houses.

The 4th forms a square to the rising sign, a ninety-degree aspect. It can see the 1st house clearly, which makes it an active, influential place. In Lilly's table of accidental strength, a planet in the 4th earns one of the higher bonuses, just behind the 1st and 10th.

No planet has its joy in the 4th house.

The IC Under Whole-Sign Houses

Under whole-sign houses, the method used in early astrology and preferred at Mystic Birth Chart, the 4th house is the entire fourth sign from your rising sign. The IC degree is calculated separately and does not always land in that sign. It can fall in the 3rd, 4th or 5th whole-sign house. When it falls elsewhere, astrologers read both: the 4th house as the topic of home and family, and the IC as a sensitive point that adds detail.

How to Read Your 4th House

  • Find the sign of the 4th house. Count four signs from your rising sign, starting with the rising sign as one. Aquarius rising gives a Taurus 4th. Virgo rising gives a Sagittarius 4th. The sign describes the atmosphere of home and family: stable, restless, warm, formal.
  • Find its ruler. With traditional rulers: Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, the Moon rules Cancer, the Sun rules Leo, Jupiter rules Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius.
  • See where the ruler lives. A 4th ruler in the 10th can link family with career, such as a family business or working from home. In the 9th, home may be far from where you were born. In the 2nd, property may be a source of income.
  • Judge the ruler's condition. A ruler that is strong by sign and supported by benefic planets usually describes a steadier foundation. Our guide to essential dignity explains how to judge this.
  • Look at planets inside and aspects to the 4th. Planets in the 4th shape the atmosphere of home and the deep layers of memory.

Each planet's expression depends on its sign, condition, aspects and whether it belongs to your chart's sect.

Sun in the 4th House

The Sun here puts home and family at the center of identity. A parent, often the father in older readings, may have been a strong presence. You may find yourself through roots, heritage or a private life that matters more than public recognition. Your light may shine strongest later in life.

Moon in the 4th House

The Moon here is emotionally tied to home. Comfort, memory and the need for a safe nest can be strong. A mother or caregiver may loom large. Many people with this placement move home more than once, or keep rearranging the one they have.

Mercury in the 4th House

Mercury here brings the mind home. You may study family history, work from home, or have grown up in a house full of books, talk or activity. Thinking can be private and reflective. Family conversations may stay with you for years.

Venus in the 4th House

Venus here seeks beauty, peace and pleasure at home. You may put real care into your surroundings and value family harmony. Traditional authors saw Venus here as a sign of good things from parents or property. Late life may bring comfort.

Mars in the 4th House

Mars here brings energy, and sometimes friction, into the home. Family life may have been lively, competitive or tense. You may be protective of your space and quick to defend family. Physical work on a house, renovation or building, is a natural outlet.

Jupiter in the 4th House

Jupiter here traditionally brings protection to home and family: a supportive parent, a generous household or good fortune with property. You may want a spacious home or a large family circle. When Jupiter struggles by sign, generosity at home may outrun means.

Saturn in the 4th House

Saturn here can describe a serious or demanding family atmosphere, early responsibility, or a parent who was distant or burdened. It can also describe deep loyalty, care for elders and a home built slowly and solidly. Many people with this placement create the stability as adults that they did not feel as children. See our guide to Saturn in the houses for more.

Uranus, Neptune and Pluto

As secondary modern factors, Uranus may bring an unusual or changeable home life, Neptune a dreamy or unclear family picture, and Pluto deep family patterns that ask to be understood.

An Empty 4th House

An empty 4th house does not mean you have no family or no home. It is one of the most common configurations in any chart.

When the 4th is empty, the ruler of the house becomes the main storyteller. Study where it sits and how it is doing. That planet often says more about your roots than a planet inside the house would.

When the 4th House Becomes Active

In the traditional timing method called annual profections, each year of life highlights one house, moving forward one house at every birthday. The 4th house takes its turn in the years that begin at ages 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63 and 75.

A 4th house year often brings home and family forward: moving house, renovating, caring for a parent, buying property or simply spending more time in private life. The ruler of your 4th house becomes the "lord of the year." Our guide to annual profections explains the method.

A Worked Example

This is a fictional chart, made up for teaching purposes.

Imagine someone we will call Nora, born during the day with Aquarius rising. Taurus is her 4th house, so Venus rules it. Venus sits in Pisces, the sign of its exaltation, in her 2nd house. Saturn sits in Taurus inside her 4th.

  • Taurus on the 4th suggests a home built for steadiness, comfort and lasting value.
  • Saturn in the 4th adds seriousness. Nora may have grown up with responsibility at a young age. Because she was born during the day, Saturn belongs to her chart's sect, which usually makes its lessons more constructive.
  • Venus exalted in the 2nd is strong and generous. It links home with income and possessions, and suggests that family property or a love of beautiful things at home may support her finances.
  • Saturn is also her chart ruler, since Saturn rules Aquarius. The planet that leads her life sits in the house of roots.

Together, this describes someone whose life is organized around building a solid foundation, with the patience to do it slowly and the taste to make it beautiful.

Common Myths About the 4th House

"The 4th house is always the mother." Different traditions assign it to different parents. Read it as the family foundation, then let the planets clarify.

"Saturn or Mars in the 4th means a bad childhood." These planets describe challenge and effort. Many people with them build strong, loving homes.

"The 4th house is only about childhood." It also governs land, property, the home you create as an adult, and how things end.

"An empty 4th means no roots." The ruler of the 4th tells the story of your roots.
