Astrology 2027: Major Transits, Eclipses and Key Dates
Astrology 2027 in plain English: Saturn and Neptune in Aries, Jupiter moving from Leo to Virgo, Mars retrograde, the eclipses and a month-by-month guide.
The sky of 2027 has a steady background and a busy foreground. The slowest planets hold their signs for the entire year: Saturn and Neptune stay in Aries, Uranus stays in Gemini, and Pluto stays in Aquarius. The movement comes from the faster planets and the eclipses. Mars spends the first quarter retrograde, Mercury turns retrograde three times, Jupiter leaves Leo for Virgo on July 26, and a total solar eclipse in Leo arrives on August 2.
This guide walks through the whole year in plain English: what each major transit is about, when it happens, and how to think about it without fear.
A quick note on dates. Every date below comes from calculated planetary positions in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). Depending on where you live, an event can fall one calendar day earlier or later on your local clock. All positions use the tropical zodiac, the one used by most Western astrologers.
How to read a year of transits
A transit is simply where a planet is right now, compared with where the planets were when you were born. When astrologers say "Saturn is transiting Aries," they mean Saturn is currently moving through the sign of Aries.
Slow planets such as Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto spend years in one sign. They describe the long background of a period, the slow pressures and opportunities everyone shares. Fast planets such as Mercury, Venus and Mars move through a sign in weeks, so they mark shorter windows inside that background.
The sign tells you the style of a transit. The house tells you where in life it shows up for you. Houses are the twelve areas of life in a birth chart: self, money, communication, home, creativity, work, relationships, and so on. In this guide we use whole-sign houses, the oldest house system, in which your Rising sign (the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born) is your entire first house, the next sign is your second house, and so on around the zodiac.
That is why the same Saturn transit can feel like a career test for one person and a home project for another. The slow planets: the background of 2027
Saturn in Aries all year
Saturn begins 2027 moving forward. It turned direct on December 10, 2026 at 7°55′ Aries and then advances through the sign for most of the year. On August 9 it stations retrograde at 27°52′ Aries, slips back to 21°01′ Aries, and turns direct again on December 24. Saturn does not reach Taurus in 2027.
In traditional astrology, Saturn is in its fall in Aries. That means it works in a sign whose nature is very different from its own. Saturn builds slowly and asks for patience. Aries starts things quickly and likes to act first. Put together, the transit tends to ask a practical question: how do you take initiative in a way you can actually sustain?
Collectively, this can show up as tests of leadership, debates about who has the right to act, and a need to turn bold plans into durable structures. For more on how this placement began, see Saturn retrograde in Aries 2026 and the companion piece Saturn in Aries 2027. If Saturn still feels like a frightening planet to you, Saturn is not punishment is a good place to start.
Neptune in the first degrees of Aries
Neptune barely moves in 2027. It turned direct on December 12, 2026 at 1°36′ Aries, stations retrograde on July 9 at 6°39′ Aries, and turns direct again on December 15 at 3°51′ Aries. The whole year happens inside the first few degrees of the sign.
Neptune is the planet of ideals, imagination, longing and blurred edges. In Aries it can inspire new visions of courage and independence, and it can also confuse questions of who is leading and why. Because Saturn shares the sign, 2027 keeps vision and structure in the same room: inspiration that wants a real form, and structures that need a reason to exist. For background, read Neptune retrograde in Aries 2026.
Uranus in Gemini
Uranus turns direct on February 8 at 1°40′ Gemini and stations retrograde on September 15 at 9°57′ Gemini. Gemini is the sign of information, language, short trips, neighbors, siblings, learning and everyday exchange. Uranus brings surprise and invention. Together they point to fast changes in how people talk, learn, travel locally and share information. See Uranus in Gemini: language and networks for the longer story.
Pluto in Aquarius
Pluto stations retrograde on May 8 at 7°10′ Aquarius and turns direct on October 18 at 4°44′ Aquarius. Aquarius is associated with groups, communities, shared systems and the future. Pluto concerns power and deep change, often slowly. The long theme is who holds power inside groups and networks, and how collective systems are rebuilt. The Pluto retrograde in Aquarius 2026 article covers this in more depth.
How the slow planets relate
By sign, the slow planets of 2027 sit in friendly relationships. Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius are both in air signs, so they form a trine by sign. Both of them also form a sextile by sign to Saturn and Neptune in Aries, a fire sign. In simple terms, air feeds fire: changes in ideas, information and networks can supply new initiatives with the oxygen they need.
Friendly sign relationships do not mean an easy year. They describe a background in which cooperation between new ideas and new structures is possible, if people do the work.
Jupiter: Leo until July 26, then Virgo
Jupiter is the planet that changes the mood of 2027. It starts the year retrograde in Leo: it turned retrograde on December 13, 2026 at 27°01′ Leo and turns direct on April 13 at 16°59′ Leo. It then moves forward through the rest of Leo and enters Virgo on July 26, where it stays for the remainder of the year. Its next retrograde begins on January 12, 2028 at 27°30′ Virgo.
Jupiter in Leo (January to late July) favors creativity, visibility, generosity, play and confident self-expression. The retrograde months of early 2027 are a good time to revisit creative projects and decide which ones deserve the spotlight. For the full picture, read Jupiter in Leo 2026-2027.
Jupiter in Virgo (late July onward) changes the tone. Traditional astrology says Jupiter is in its detriment in Virgo, meaning it sits opposite its own home sign of Pisces. That does not make it harmful. It means growth comes through detail, craft, practical skill, routines and useful service rather than grand gestures. The companion guide Jupiter in Virgo 2027-2028 explains this transit sign by sign.
Mars retrograde: January 10 to April 1
Mars stations retrograde on January 10 at 10°25′ Virgo, moves backward into Leo on February 21, and turns direct on April 1 at 20°55′ Leo. It returns to Virgo on May 14.
A planet is retrograde when, seen from Earth, it appears to move backward through the zodiac for a while. Nothing physically reverses; it is an effect of Earth passing or being passed by another planet. Astrologers read retrograde periods as times of review.
Mars is the planet of effort, drive, courage and conflict. A Mars retrograde tends to favor finishing, repairing and retraining over starting new fights or launching from scratch. Old disagreements may resurface so they can be settled properly. The full guide is Mars retrograde 2027 in Virgo and Leo.
Three Mercury retrogrades
Mercury turns retrograde three times in 2027:
- February 9 to March 3: from 5°58′ Pisces back to 20°55′ Aquarius.
- June 10 to July 4: from 6°21′ Cancer back to 27°28′ Gemini.
- October 7 to October 28: from 4°55′ Scorpio back to 19°18′ Libra.

There is a neat pattern this year: each retrograde begins in a water sign and finishes in the air sign just before it. Feelings and impressions get reviewed through words and reasoning. Mercury retrograde is a time for checking, revising and reconnecting, not a time to panic. Dates, degrees and the "shadow" periods around each one are in Mercury retrograde 2027 dates.
The eclipses of 2027
Eclipses happen when a New Moon or Full Moon falls close to the lunar nodes, the two points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path. The pair of signs holding the nodes is called the eclipse axis. Through 2027 the North Node is in Aquarius and the South Node is in Leo, so the main eclipses fall on the Leo-Aquarius axis.
The eclipses of the year are:
- February 6: annular solar eclipse at 17°37′ Aquarius.
- February 20: penumbral lunar eclipse at 1°58′ Virgo.
- July 18: penumbral lunar eclipse at 25°57′ Capricorn.
- August 2: total solar eclipse at 9°55′ Leo.
- August 17: penumbral lunar eclipse at 24°04′ Aquarius.
The two penumbral lunar eclipses in Virgo and Capricorn sit just outside the Leo-Aquarius pair of signs, while the solar eclipses and the August lunar eclipse fall right on it. A penumbral lunar eclipse is a subtle one, where the Moon passes only through the outer edge of Earth's shadow.
The headline is the total solar eclipse of August 2 at 9°55′ Leo. Its path of totality crosses southern Spain, North Africa and parts of the Middle East, and NASA's predictions show it as one of the longest totalities of the century. In astrological terms, a solar eclipse is a powerful New Moon: a beginning that often becomes clearer over the following months. Read the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027 for its full meaning.
The Leo-Aquarius axis contrasts the individual heart (Leo) with the group and the network (Aquarius). It asks how personal expression and belonging can support each other. For how the nodes work in a natal chart, see the North Node in your birth chart.
2027 month by month
January
Mars stations retrograde on January 10 at 10°25′ Virgo, which sets the tone for the first quarter: review before you push. Jupiter is still retrograde in Leo. The New Moon on January 7 falls at 17°18′ Capricorn and the Full Moon on January 22 at 2°14′ Leo.
February
A dense month. The annular solar eclipse on February 6 at 17°37′ Aquarius opens a new chapter on the group and community side of the eclipse axis. Uranus turns direct on February 8, Mercury stations retrograde on February 9 at 5°58′ Pisces, and the penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20 falls at 1°58′ Virgo. Mars backs into Leo on February 21.
March
Mercury turns direct on March 3 at 20°55′ Aquarius. Venus enters Pisces on March 26, a sign where traditional astrology says Venus is exalted, or especially well placed. The Sun enters Aries on March 20, the March equinox, and joins Saturn and Neptune in that sign for a month. The New Moon of March 8 is at 17°35′ Pisces.
April
Mars turns direct on April 1 at 20°55′ Leo and Jupiter turns direct on April 13 at 16°59′ Leo. With both planets moving forward, delayed plans can restart on a firmer footing. The New Moon on April 6 at 16°57′ Aries is a natural moment for a deliberate beginning. Venus and the Sun both change signs on April 20.
May
Pluto stations retrograde on May 8 at 7°10′ Aquarius. Mars re-enters Virgo on May 14, the same day Venus enters Taurus, one of its home signs. Mercury moves quickly through Gemini from May 9 and enters Cancer on May 28. The Full Moon on May 20 falls at 29°13′ Scorpio.
June
The New Moon on June 4 at 13°58′ Gemini favors learning and conversation. Mercury stations retrograde on June 10 at 6°21′ Cancer and slips back into Gemini on June 26. The Sun enters Cancer on June 21, the June solstice.
July
Mercury turns direct on July 4 at 27°28′ Gemini, the same UTC date as the New Moon at 11°57′ Cancer. Neptune stations retrograde on July 9, Mars enters Libra on July 15, and the penumbral lunar eclipse on July 18 falls at 25°57′ Capricorn. The big shift comes on July 26, when Jupiter enters Virgo, three days after the Sun enters Leo.
August
The total solar eclipse on August 2 at 9°55′ Leo is the astrological peak of the year. Saturn stations retrograde on August 9 at 27°52′ Aries and begins its review phase. The penumbral lunar eclipse on August 17 at 24°04′ Aquarius completes the summer eclipse season. Venus enters Virgo on August 20 and the Sun on August 23, joining Jupiter there.
September
Mars enters Scorpio, one of its home signs, on September 2. Venus reaches Libra, another Venus home, on September 14. Uranus stations retrograde on September 15 at 9°57′ Gemini, and the Sun enters Libra on September 23, the September equinox. The New Moon on September 30 is at 6°43′ Libra.
October
Mercury stations retrograde on October 7 at 4°55′ Scorpio, re-enters Libra on October 16 and turns direct on October 28 at 19°18′ Libra. Pluto turns direct on October 18 at 4°44′ Aquarius. Mars enters Sagittarius on October 15 (October 16 in some time zones). The Full Moon of October 15 is at 21°59′ Aries.
November
Mercury returns to Scorpio on November 10. The Full Moon on November 14 is at 21°31′ Taurus. Mars enters Capricorn on November 25, where traditional astrology considers it exalted, the same day Venus enters Capricorn. The New Moon on November 28 at 5°39′ Sagittarius invites a look at the year ahead.
December
Neptune turns direct on December 15 at 3°51′ Aries and Saturn turns direct on December 24 at 21°01′ Aries, so both slow Aries planets end the year moving forward. The Full Moon on December 13 is at 21°25′ Gemini, the Sun enters Capricorn on December 22, and the New Moon on December 27 falls at 5°50′ Capricorn.
Looking into early 2028
The year closes into a new eclipse season. A partial lunar eclipse at 21°33′ Cancer and Jupiter's retrograde station at 27°30′ Virgo both arrive on January 12, 2028, Mercury stations retrograde on January 24, 2028 at 19°41′ Aquarius, and an annular solar eclipse at 6°10′ Aquarius follows on January 26, 2028.
How to make 2027 personal
A general forecast like this one describes weather. Your birth chart describes the landscape that weather falls on. Three things make a year personal:
- Which houses the transits activate. This depends on your Rising sign, which is why the Rising sign horoscope is more useful than a Sun sign column.
- Which natal planets are touched. A transit that crosses the exact degree of your natal Moon or Sun matters far more than one passing through an empty part of the chart.
- Which planet leads your year. Traditional astrologers use annual profections to find the "lord of the year," the planet whose transits deserve extra attention, and often combine it with a solar return chart.
If you would like all of that worked out for you, the 2027 Year Ahead Guide is a personal guide of more than 50 pages calculated from your own birth chart. It combines transits, secondary progressions and solar arc directions month by month, with your key dates listed. The calculations are deterministic, and the interpretation is written from those calculated facts.
If you would rather start with who you are before looking at timing, the Essential Birth Chart Reading reads your natal chart as a whole. And if you only want to know your Rising sign before reading further, the free birth chart takes a minute.
Whatever your chart shows, 2027 is not a script. Transits describe pressures and openings. What you build with them is still yours to decide.
