Mars Retrograde 2027: Dates, Degrees, and the Leo Backtrack
Mars retrograde 2027 runs January 10 to April 1, backing out of Virgo into Leo. Key dates, degrees, plain meaning, and how to find the house it crosses for you.
Mars turns retrograde on January 10, 2027, at 10°25′ Virgo. It backs up through the early degrees of Virgo, slips into Leo again on February 21, and turns direct on April 1 at 20°55′ Leo. For about eleven weeks, the planet of drive, courage, and conflict appears to move backward through two signs.
That sounds dramatic, but Mars retrograde is a regular part of the sky. It happens roughly every two years. What changes each time is where it happens, and that is what makes it personal. This guide gives you the dates, explains what the retrograde means in plain terms, and shows you how to find the part of your own chart it crosses.
All times below are in Universal Time (UTC). Depending on where you live, the calendar date can land one day earlier or later.
Mars retrograde 2027 at a glance
- Mars stations retrograde: January 10, 2027, 13:01 UTC, at 10°25′ Virgo.
- Mars re-enters Leo while retrograde: February 21, 2027, 14:15 UTC.
- Mars stations direct: April 1, 2027, 14:10 UTC, at 20°55′ Leo.
- Mars re-enters Virgo moving forward: May 14, 2027, 14:47 UTC.
- Mars enters Libra: July 15, 2027, 05:40 UTC.
The full stretch of sky Mars revisits runs from 20°55′ Leo to 10°25′ Virgo. Astrologers sometimes call this the retrograde zone. After Mars re-enters Virgo on May 14, it still has to climb back up to 10°25′ Virgo before it has fully moved past the ground it covered while backing up.
What "retrograde" actually means
No planet really reverses. Earth and Mars both orbit the Sun, and Earth moves faster on the inside track. When Earth catches up to Mars and passes it, Mars appears to slow down, stop, and drift backward against the background stars for a while. Around the middle of a Mars retrograde, Earth and Mars are at their closest, and Mars shines especially bright in the night sky.
A station is the moment a planet seems to stand still before changing direction. Stations matter in traditional astrology because a planet that stops in one place concentrates its meaning there. The January 10 and April 1 stations are the two most noticeable points of this cycle.
In traditional astrology, Mars is the planet of heat, cutting, separation, and effort. It describes how we push, defend, compete, and act when something needs to change. It is not simply "bad." A well-used Mars is the courage to start, the ability to say no, and the stamina to finish hard work.
When Mars moves backward, that energy tends to turn around. Plans you pushed forward last year come back for review. Old disagreements resurface. Effort that went in the wrong direction becomes obvious. The retrograde is a season for rework, repair, and retraining, not a curse on action.
Why this retrograde moves from Virgo back into Leo
Mars begins the retrograde in Virgo, an earth sign ruled by Mercury. Virgo is about skill, analysis, routines, service, health habits, and the details that make things work. Mars in Virgo wants to fix, improve, and get the method right.
Then, on February 21, Mars slides backward into Leo, a fire sign ruled by the Sun. Leo is about the heart, pride, visibility, creativity, play, and leadership. Mars in Leo wants recognition, warmth, and a chance to act boldly.
So the 2027 retrograde has two acts.
Act one: Virgo (January 10 to February 21)
The first weeks put the spotlight on work methods, daily systems, and anything that requires precision. You may notice where your routine is draining you, where a process at work keeps breaking, or where you have been criticizing yourself or others more than is useful. Mercury, Virgo's ruler, also stations retrograde on February 9 at 5°58′ Pisces, so for the last stretch of this act both Mars and its host are moving backward. That combination favors checking details twice, revisiting agreements, and slowing down before reacting.
On February 20, a penumbral lunar eclipse falls at 1°58′ Virgo, in the same early Virgo degrees Mars is about to leave. It is a soft eclipse, but it adds emphasis to whatever Virgo matters have been building in your life.
Act two: Leo (February 21 to the April 1 station and beyond)
Once Mars is back in Leo, the questions become more personal and more about the heart. Where did you push for attention, credit, or control? Where have you held back your creative fire? Jupiter is also in Leo during these months, retrograde until April 13, so both planets are reviewing Leo matters together. That can make this a good time to revisit a creative project, a leadership role, or a relationship with a child or a loved one that needs a fresh, more generous approach.
Mars stations direct at 20°55′ Leo on April 1. Around that date, the theme of the whole retrograde often becomes clearer. Then Mars moves forward through Leo, crosses into Virgo again on May 14, and finally leaves the retrograde zone behind before entering Libra on July 15.
How to find the house Mars crosses in your chart
The most useful thing you can do is find where Leo and Virgo fall in your own birth chart. Each sign occupies one of your twelve houses, and each house is an area of life. If you are new to houses, our guide to houses in astrology explains them simply.
Traditional astrologers often use whole-sign houses: the entire sign on your Ascendant is your first house, the next sign is your second, and so on. Using that method, here is where the retrograde lands for each rising sign:

Look for natal planets in the zone
Next, check whether you have any planets or angles between 20° Leo and 10° Virgo. If you do, Mars will pass over them three times: once before the retrograde, once while backing up, and once more after turning direct. Those people usually feel this retrograde most clearly.
A few examples of how that can read:
- Natal Sun in the zone: questions about confidence, energy, and how hard you are pushing yourself.
- Natal Moon in the zone: emotional reactions run warmer; rest and honest conversations help.
- Natal Venus in the zone: relationship tension or a desire to renegotiate what you give and receive.
- Natal Mercury in the zone: heated discussions, rewriting plans, sharper words than intended.
- Natal Ascendant or Midheaven in the zone: the retrograde touches your body, your direction, or your public role directly.
Also check the condition of your natal Mars. A person whose Mars is strong and well supported often handles the retrograde as a useful reset. If Mars is your chart ruler or is closely connected to the Ascendant, the period can feel more central. Our guide to the chart ruler shows how to check that.
What tends to come up during Mars retrograde
None of these is guaranteed. They are common patterns astrologers watch for when Mars moves backward:
- Unfinished efforts return. A project you abandoned, a fitness routine you dropped, or a conflict you avoided asks for a second look.
- Anger has a history. Frustration often has less to do with the present moment and more to do with something left unaddressed.
- Momentum slows. Pushing harder can bring diminishing returns. Changing the method often works better than adding force.
- Repairs go well. Fixing, editing, rebuilding, and retraining are usually more productive than launching something brand new.
- Physical energy may dip or scatter. Many people simply feel less driven. That is a normal rhythm, not a failure. If you have health concerns, talk with a medical professional rather than relying on a transit.
Practical guidance for the 2027 retrograde
Before January 10
Notice which areas of life feel urgent in late 2026. Write down the main project, conflict, or goal that is taking your energy. That list will be a helpful reference when the retrograde begins.
During the Virgo phase
Audit your systems. Which routines are working, and which are wasting effort? Clean up schedules, fix the tools you rely on, and finish half-done tasks. With Mercury also retrograde from February 9, read contracts carefully and give important messages a second draft.
During the Leo phase
Return to a creative idea, a leadership role, or a relationship that needs more heart and less pride. Ask yourself where you want recognition and whether you are going about it in a way you respect. Generosity tends to work better than force here.
Around April 1
The direct station is a natural point to decide. What did the review show you? What will you start, stop, or change? Choose one clear action and give it a realistic timeline.
After May 14
As Mars moves through Virgo again, apply what you learned. This is where the work of the retrograde becomes visible in practical results.
Mars retrograde and the rest of 2027
Mars retrograde opens a year with a lot of movement in the sky. Saturn spends all of 2027 in Aries, Jupiter moves from Leo into Virgo in July, and the eclipses fall on the Leo-Aquarius axis. You can read more in our guides to Saturn in Aries in 2027, Jupiter in Virgo, and the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027. Notice that Jupiter later moves through the same early Virgo degrees Mars revisits now, which can give the work you begin in spring a more supportive second chapter.
If you want to see how Mars retrograde fits with everything else in your year, the 2027 Year Ahead Guide is a personal 50+ page guide calculated from your own birth chart. It covers your transits, progressions, solar arc directions, and key dates month by month, and it is calculated from your own chart. If you would rather understand the whole natal chart first, including how your own Mars works, the Essential Birth Chart Reading reads the chart as a whole.
Mars retrograde is not a reason to stop living for three months. It is a reminder that effort works best when it is pointed in the right direction. Slow down, review, repair, and then move again with better aim.
